We adapt our teaching to meet the needs of every individual. This means recognising differences in prior knowledge, pace, and individual needs, and adjusting the lesson so that every pupil can access the content and be challenged appropriately.
How do we teach?
Our approach to teaching combines our ‘ART of Teaching’ with a structured Learning Cycle to maximise every child’s progress. Together, they ensure lessons are adaptive, responsive, and effective helping all pupils achieve their potential.
The ART of Teaching
A
A – Adaptive Teaching
R
R – Responsive Teaching
We respond to what is happening in the room. By actively listening, questioning, and observing, we can identify misconceptions and address them immediately ensuring pupils are supported before moving forward.
T
T – Teacher Modelling
We explicitly model thinking, problem-solving, and skill application. Through “thinking aloud” and guided examples, pupils can see the process in action before trying it themselves.
The Learning Cycle
Our Learning Cycle is a four-stage process that promotes deep understanding and independent application.
- 1 – Checking Understanding
We begin by assessing pupils’ understanding of what was taught previously. This ensures new learning builds on secure foundations. - 2 – Teacher Demonstration (“I do, we do”)
The teacher models new knowledge or skills, first demonstrating (“I do”), then guiding the class through examples together (“we do”). - 3 – Checking Understanding (Again)
Before moving on, we check what pupils have grasped. This helps us address gaps or misconceptions in real time. - 4 – Independent Practice
Pupils apply what they have learned on their own, reinforcing new knowledge and skills through practice.
Why this matters
By combining the ART of Teaching with the Learning Cycle, we create lessons that are tailored, interactive, and purposeful ensuring every child gets the support and challenge they need at exactly the right time.
